Potter & Perry Is The Best Textbook I've Ever Used October 27, 2003 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I found this book to be very comprehensive and easy to read. I also love the illustrations. The skills are very easy to follow.
It helped me then....It helps me now! February 8, 2004 Shirley Catron (Virginia) 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
At first, being a very green student in terms of learning nursing care, the very size of this book was intimidating. Being in an ADN-RN program, the learning if fast-paced so we often had a lot of chapters to read in a short amount of time. Though I wasn't a straight A student, I still found this book to be very helpful in aiding my understanding of the material, perhaps more now when I review it than at the time when I first read it. My favorite part is the illustrated procedure pages with step by step instructions. It covers everything from properly mitering a bed to IV therapy and so much more. I think our instructors chose well in picking this one for their first semester students. It's a great intro to learning nursing and a great review book too. I'm in my second semester and review it often while studying Med Surg.
5 stars because it takes you where you need to go August 11, 2009 Mrs. Night Owl 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is the book used for my skills class in nursing school. It starts with basics like the health care system, developmental theories (Erikson, etc), critical thinking and the nursing process. An entire chapter is dedicated to each part of the nursing process which is nice for reference. As another reviewer said, the book does have some errors but they are typos - like those found in most everything nowadays.
The strong points of this book are taking you through processes and explaining how and why. For example, knowing pt positions like High Fowlers. What is it? HOB at 45 degrees, semi sitting, foot of bed may be raised... What is it used for? while pt is eating, NG tube insertion, promotes lung expansion.
This information is straightforward and easy to use and identify with. In this book you learn about so many nursing basics like hygiene, pt positioning, medication administration, infection prevention, wound care, ambulation, safety (key for NCLEX), oxygenation, pain mangement, fluid/electrolytes, Foleys, bedpans, enemas, pressure ulcers, and vital signs. The book explains the topic, relates it to the overall health of the pt, and explains step-by-step how to perform the tasks needed to function as a nurse.
I think it is really helpful and I plan to keep it to use for the remainder of nursing school.
